Many employees want to work for an altruistic organization that makes a positive impact…but these employers may guilt you into accepting less in pay.

A study from The University of Texas at Austin examined the impact of “social impact framing” —when a company emphasizes its positive impact on society. Job candidates who were exposed to this messaging felt it would be against company culture to ask for a higher salary.

“There’s an implicit assumption that money and altruism don’t mix,” Professor Insiya Hussain said. “Even if job candidates might not necessarily subscribe to this view, they’re assuming that hiring managers will.” (Study Finds)
